香，在中国古代有着广泛的用途，人们用它熏燃、悬佩、涂敷甚至饮用。春秋战国时期，人们已将薰草、古兰、郁金、茅香等香草用于香身、熏香、辟秽、祛虫、医疗养生等许多领域，并有佩带、熏烧、熏浴、饮服等多种用法，插戴香草、佩带香囊、沐浴香汤等做法渐次兴起。随着熏香风气的逐渐流行，用以熏香的熏炉也应运而生。考古发现证实，至迟在战国时期，一些熏炉的制作已达到了相当的程度。
