现在说的五帝钱一般是指“清代五帝钱”，是清朝昌盛的五位帝王（顺治、康熙、雍正、乾隆和嘉庆）在位期间所铸造的古钱。这五位帝王相继在位180年，是清朝辉煌的时期，在位期间国势强盛，出现了前史上的“康乾盛世”。而研究中国历史的就知道，真正属于我们民族的五帝钱，应该是大五帝钱。

大五帝钱也称“五帝钱”，是指秦始皇、汉武帝、唐太宗、宋太祖和明成祖5位帝王在位期间所铸造的古钱。

大五帝钱的历史已久远，后一枚古钱距今也已有600多年的历史。它们大多来源于出土，所以锈迹较重。当然，不管大五帝钱还是小五帝钱，都是不容易得到了。
